The Shifting Heart
Nicholas Ilechie / / 2 min read

Yesterday I wanted love
soft whispers and forever plans,
a woman to build dreams with,
someone to hold my restless hands.
I craved the weight of wedding rings,
the sound of children’s laughter,
a home where roots grow deep and strong,
a happily ever after.
But today the sun hits different,
my chest feels light and free
I want the taste of adventure,
wild nights and good company.
Money in my pockets,
spend without a budget,
good times that never end.
Great experiences with no strings attached,
rules I don’t have to bend.
Tomorrow I might wake up lonely,
searching for a soul to know
wanting someone who sees my depths,
someone to help me grow.
Maybe I’ll crave tiny fingers
wrapped around my thumb,
the chaos of a family life,
the man I could become.
This heart of mine’s a pendulum,
swinging left and right
between the need for freedom
and the pull of love’s sweet light.
One day I’m Klaus - immortal, wild, and free.
The next, I’m Nicholas - just a mortal man
who craves stability.
They say to know yourself
but which self should I choose?
The lover or the wanderer?
Either way, I cannot lose.
For maybe I’m not broken.
Maybe I’m just alive,
a man with room for everything,
with space for all to thrive.
So let me want it all at once.
Let me change my mind.
Let me be complex and messy,
beautifully undefined.
The heart wants what it wants,
and sometimes what it needs
is permission to be human,
to plant different kinds of seeds.
